Drone attacks near Baghdad airport raise security concerns

2026-03-15 - 12:17

Baghdad, March 15 (SANA) Iraqi authorities have raised concerns over a series of drone attacks near Baghdad International Airport in recent days, warning they could pose a threat to a nearby high-security prison. Ahmed Laibi, a spokesperson for Iraq’s Ministry of Justice, said some of the strikes came dangerously close to Karkh Central Prison, which houses inmates convicted of terrorism-related offenses. Laibi warned that such incidents could affect precautionary measures, prison security plans and nearby infrastructure. Security sources also reported that a drone strike targeted the airport complex on Saturday, though no casualties were immediately reported. The incidents come amid heightened regional tensions, with Israel and the United States carrying out strikes against Iran since Feb. 28, while Tehran has responded with missile and drone attacks on Israel and several countries in the region. k.A.A
